Andy Cohen dies on mountain

Andrew (Andy) Cohen, RPCV/Kenya, age 32, died in a climbing accident on Mt. Ruapehu, New Zealand, on July 1, 2001.

Andy was a Senior Scientist at the New Zealand Forest Research Institute, Rotorua, New Zealand. A recent recruit to Forest Research, Andy will be remembered for his contribution and visionary approach to climate charge, sustainable forestry and energy research.

Andy served in the Peace Corps in Kenya from 1996–98. He then stayed on for 2 1/2 more years as a Projects Manager for Energy Alternatives Africa in Nairobi.

He graduated from Yale University School of Forestry and Environmental Science in1994 and the University of Illinois in 1991.

A memorial service was held in the arboretum in Nairobi. His funeral was held in his hometown of Schaumburg, Ill.

He is survived by his parents, Howard and Susan Cohen, and his sister, Dena.

The family has designated Friends of Kenya for memorial gifts, earmarked for projects in conservation, environment and health.
