Below is a list of the current projects that Friends of Kenya is funding, as of February 2007.

Uluthe Community Safe Water Project (October 2007)
$1,000 to support the protection of five water sources in Siaya district of Nyanza Province. In partnership with the Conifer Rotary Club of Colorado.

Project Baobab (November 2007)

$1,500 to provide 15 small business grants to women who have completed Project Baobab’s Life Skills and Entrepreneurship Education program at the Ollooseos School in Kiserian and Lang’ata Women’s Prison in Nairobi. (Click the title for more projects and information)

Bernadette’s Self Help Group (October 2007)
$300 to support the livelihoods for AIDS orphans in Kadongo, Nyanza.

What FOK Has Funded since 1986
Since its inception in 1986, Friends of Kenya has provided approximately $60,000 in assistance to the human welfare and environmental projects listed below. The most recent projects are listed first.

Camp G.L.O.W. (Girls Leading Our World) May 2007
(PCV Amber Robbins)
$500 to support Camp GLOW, an annual event by the Gender and Development Committee of Peace Corps Kenya to empower young Kenyan women in secondary school, ages 15–20. Campers spend a week learning critical about life skills, empowerment, self esteem, goal setting, and women’s health.

Kaboson Tree Nursery Project April 2007
(PCV James Flock)
$600 to support improvements at the Tree Nursery and community education about agro-forestry and the importance of tree planting in the community. The Nursery sponsored a local Environmental Day with the planting of 600 trees.

Beekeeping at Kuri Kuri Group Ranch, Samburu.
Sponsored by African Wildlife Association.
FOK gave $1,500.

Female Genital Mutilation, Analysis and Dialogue for Change, Kisii.
FOK gave $1,000.

Project Baobab (2003; 2004; 2007)
This nonprofit, headquartered in Palo Alto, Calif., is dedicated to fostering entrepreneurship in Kenyan youth, especially women. The project trains teachers at five secondary schools to teach entrepreneurial skills to Form IV students and women in the community. Each student produces a plan for a micro enterprise; micro-grants of $100 each are awarded to students with the most promising plans.
