Friends of Kenya hosted three events for RPCVs from Kenya as part of the 45th Peace Corps Anniversary celebration in Washington, D.C. over the weekend of September 15-17. - Friday, September 15: We gathered at the Embassy of Kenya for a Reception and Art Show, featuring the art from Wisson West's gallery in Maryland. More than 60 people gathered to meet the new Kenyan Ambassador as well as other RPCVs.
- Saturday, September 16: We met at the Safari DC Restaurant in Washington, D.C., for a fabulous buffet dinner featuring chicken curry, roasted beef, sukuma wiki, rice, ugali, samosas, salad and fruit--there were a lot of stories told of our days in Kenya over Tusker beer. Joseph Permetti even brought his fabulous album of memorabilia, including the menu from the Thorntree and assorted Daily Nation newspapers dating to 199 to 1983. Bob and Connie Gribbin joined us after having returned from a several week trip to Alaska the night before.
- Sunday, September 17: A small group enjoyed a tour of the Museum of African Art.
Several of us met at the Embassy of Ghana on Saturday afternoon for a gathering of all RPCVs. Ghana was the first country to host Peace Corps Volunteers, and Ghana's first PC director said a few words. The president of the NPCA also asked that we start planning now for the 50th anniversary celebration of Peace Corps in five years. If you are not yet a member of Friends of Kenya, please join as we support community-based programs in Kenya, encourage camaraderie amongst all RPCVs from Kenya, reach out to the Kenyan community here in the U.S., and bring back Kenya to our friends and communities here. Go to the membership page for more information.
